The first "healers" were chronicled in cave paintings in what now is France. Paintings were radiocarbonated as far back as 27,000 years ago and decipted people using plants for medicinal purpose. Greece and the birthplace of medical ethics
The famed Greek "physician" Hippocrates, was highly influenced by Egyptian and Babylonian medicine. He wrote the Hippocractic Corpus which is a collection of around seventy early medical works from anicent Greece strongly associatede with Hippocrates and his students. Hippocrates invented the Hoppocratic Oath for physicians, which is still revelant and in use today -

Doctors began practicing in what you could call hospitals, around this time they generally knew about how to use catgut and forceps, plaster, ligature, surgical needle, saw, scalpels, and the calming, surgical spoon. Medicine was more likely to help you than harm you at this point -

Medieval Europe and the first Medical Schools
In 12th century Italy, they saw the first emergence of universities and medical schools. Being a doctor depended less on the "gospel" of pre-existing medical texrs and more on applying those texts to a doctor's individual experiences on the field. -
19th Century and the explosion of science
Physicians began to access other discilplines to help heal patients. In turn, they also began to draw on mulitple facets of medicine to cure ailments. 19th century doctors had at their disposal a mass amount of things including, knowledge of evolution, psychiatry, the beginnings of genetics, and immunology. -
Modern medicine begins
Soon after 1920, physicians no longer needed to ask permission of the church to before starting their starting their practice and/or performing surgery.Reliable prescription drugs and penicillin began to curb sickness before surgery or last resorts were necessary. The last lobotomy to treat schizophrenia was done in 1979 -
The Future
Between the rapid use of technology and scarcity of actual doctors, physicians will see patients any way they can. Medicine will be tailored to each patient'ss invidual genome, administered both boy nano-scale and sports-stadium-sized apparati, across time zones and even on other worlds. -
Modern Doctors
A modern doctor is all the things people expect when they visit the hospital, they're as much as a superhero as a science fiction character. In 2000, The Human Genome Project (HGP) draft was completed. This project involved collaborators from all over the world, their main goal being to determine the sequence of chemical base pair which make up DNA.
