History of PE, Exercise Science & Sport Timeline

  • Native Americans living a very active lifestyle, they hunted, fished, canoed and ran from place to place. They played baggataway, and shiney, with multiple other ball games. Then the colonist started showing up in later years.

  • Multiple colonist arrived from Europe, this allowed the European sports and Native American sports to mix. The Dutch participated in skating, coasting, hunting , fishing and bowling. While the English participated in running, boxing, and many others.

  • Charles Beck introduced Jahn's gymnastic program of exercise and apparatus to his students at the Round Hill School.Beck started the first school gymnastics program.

  • Catherine Beecher, was the director of Hartford female seminary school. In 1828 she developed an implemented a PE program within the curriculum of the school.

  • The first YMCA in the US. The YMCA stressed the unity of the body, mind and spirit.

  • Edward Hitchcock was named the director of health and hygiene at Amherst College. Hitchcock was responsible for physical development and health of the students.

  • Start of the National Association of Amateur Athletics of America changes to, American Athletic Union (AAU).

  • Delphine Hanna attended Sargents school and received training. Hanna was later promoted to a full professor, being the first women in US history to be a full professor of PE.

  • Association for the Advancement of Physical Education (AAPE) was founded. A significant step in the development of PE.

  • The AAPE changes their name to American Association for the Advancement of Physical Education (AAAPE). This is the forerunner for todays, American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD)

  • The first modern olympics were held in Athens. Organized by William Sloane.

  • Robert Tait McKenzie worked to help develop programs for individuals with disabilities.

  • Clark Hetherington articulated the four objectives of physical education. These being Organic development, psychomotor development, character development, and intellectual development.

  • The teachers college of Columbia and New York University offered the first doctoral degrees in PE. Other programs around the country began to do the same.

  • Under the title American College Athletics, college sports denounced athletics as being professional rather than amateur in nature. Problems such as recruiting and subsidizing were exposed.

  • Representatives of Junior Colleges in California met. The purpose behind this was for forming the National Junior College Athletic Association.

  • The National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball was established. For the purpose of providing an association for the smaller colleges.

  • The National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball changes its name to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. Also known today as the NAIA.

  • The Federation of of Sports Medicine was founded. This later became the American College of Sports Medicine, (ACSM).

  • Physical Educators were convinced individuals with special needs would benefit from PE. This led to the founding of the special olympics in 1968.

  • Title 9 prohibits sex discrimination in any educational program or activity. This opens up opportunities for girls and women in intercollegiate and interscholastic classes.

  • The AAPE changes its name to the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education. Later recommended kinesiology as the title of the discipline.

  • The US has more than 150 different names for departments of higher education. This influences professional preparation programs at colleges and universities.

  • Sport had emerged as big business for divison 1 schools. Media revenues for football and basketball games reached the millions.

  • The Paralympics in London involved 4,203 athletes, representing 164 countries. There were 503 events in 20 sports.
