The Phonograph
The Phonograph was first invented in 12 August 1877, by Thomas Edison. The first words ever recorded on a phonograph were "Mary had a little lamb." The phonograph was used to record and play sound, the sound was played on round cylinders. And the recording only lasted for one play. -

The Gramophone and Records
The gramophone and records were invented on 8 November 1887 by Emile Berliner. Just like the Phonograph it plays sound. But the difference is that instead of cylinders playing the sound it is records. -
Round-Topped Jukebox
In 1946 Louis Glass and William S. Arnold invented the Round-Topped Jukebox, which was also called "The Bubbler", was mass produced after World War II. Louis liked to call it the "Coin-operated Phonograph." -
Multitrack Recorder
The Multitrack recorder was used to help record different sounds and put them together. This is what music companies use to record ther music. When this was first invented famous groups, like the Beetles, used this equipment. -
Cassette Tapes
Lou Ottens (Head of Product's Development for Phillips) invented the Cassette Tape. He introduced this invention at the 1963 Radio Exhibition in Berlin. Cassette tapes are compact cases containing a length of magnetic tape that runs between two small reels: used for recording or playback in a tape recorder or cassette deck. -
The Walkman
In 1979, Sony introduces the Walkman, a portable cassette player, initially called the "Soundabout". -
Compact Discs (CDs)
In 1982 James T. Russell invented Compact Discs (CDs). CDs are a popular form of digital storage media used for computer files, pictures, and music. But these discs were not famous until it was mass manufatured by Phillips. -
Portable CD Player
In 1984, Sony introduced the portable CD player. -
The First MP3 Player
SaeHan, a Korean company, created the first ever MP3 player called the MPMan, and it appeared on the shelves of stores by the summer of 1998. The MP3 player was where you could listen to your music with the same quality on a CD with stereo music. -
iPod
In 2001, Apple created the iPod. The iPod stores all of your music which you can play again and again. Just like an MP3 player. Over the years the iPod became a big product and Apple kept improving it and creating more iPods and different models.
