This is the first school to provide higher education in arts and sciences for African descent students. -
Establishment of Howard University
Oliver Otis Howard founded this university to provide education for African American youth. -
Meharry Medical College Opened
This is the first medical school in the south for African Americans. This is another opportunity for African Americans to achieve schooling and higher education. -
First Indian Boarding School Opens
The opening of this school resulted in 26 similar schools opening sharing the same goal of integrating Indian students into mainstream culture. -
Brown v. Board of Education
The Court declared separate schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional. This led to the desegregation of schools. -
McCarver Elementary School
McCarver Elementary School becomes the nation's first magnet school in Washington. Later, the magnet school William Monroe Trotter School was established in the west coast to help attract white children to a black neighborhood for schooling by offering special education of specific aspects of curriculum. -
Bilingual Education Act
This act mandated school to offer bilingual education. This requirement helped schools provide full access to the learning environment for language minority students. This was later replaced by the No Child Left Behind Act which basically had the same goal. -
Indian Education Act
Indian Education Act is established to provide a method of meeting the needs of Native American and Alaska Native students. -
Equal Educational Opportunities Act
This act prohibited discrimination in school and protected students that have difficulty speaking English. -
The Immigration and Nationality Act
This act increased annual immigration which added more diversity to the United States and to schooling. The increase in diversity led to the opportunity of having more acceptance of different races.
