    In Virginia 1635 the first free school for the public was opened. This was the start of public education on the North American Continent. A Grammar school was opened before this but private schools typically don't deal with the same cultural issues as public schools do. So I see this as the start of multicultural education although it was limited to just one race at the time.

    Ursuline Academy of New Orleans opened in 1727 as a catholic girls only education facility. I believe it is the first school to serve women as most schools up to that point were likely primarily focused on boys as women were typically left to house work. It also offered classes for female african american slaves or free women of color as well as native americans.

    The first higher education for students of African decent was actually opened before the civil war took place. It was the first college that sought out african students to teach and provide a good education to.

    The first university to treat both male and female applicants with the same rules and standards. It was the first co-ed higher learning facility in the united states.

    Slavery was abolished as well as african men and women were deemed to have the same rights and protection under the law that white people had.

    The department of education is finally established to help states establish school systems. They cannot make the systems themselves but can aid the states in doing so.

    Because of the low graduation rates in high schools in Ohio the authorization was granted to open the first Junior High School in order to prepare the students for High School. Indianola was that first School that paved the way for future Junior High Schools.

    This historic ruling got rid of the seperate but equal clasues that the south had been using to keep african students out of the classrooms. With this ruling gone they would be forced to integrate schools and have white and black students learn side by side.

    This is the countries first bilingual and bi cultural school to open as a response to the influx of Cuban immigrants. This is huge as since education started in the United States it had only ever been english and american culture. This was the first school to teach another language as well as welcome a culture that wasn't mainstream.

    This indirectly increased the amount of diversity we would come to see in the american school systems. It allowed vast amounts of Asian and Latin american immigrants into the country. When they had children these children would be in the school systems providing new diversity and challenge.
