    Following the Cuban Revolution a large number of Cuban immigrants moved to Miami. In response Miami Dade County created the first bilingual and bi-cultural public school in the United States, Coral Way Elementary School.
  • The Civil Rights Act becomes a law.

    The Civil Rights Act becomes a law.
    President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act into a law which prohibits discrimination based on sex, race, color, national origin, or religion.
  • The Bilingual Education Act

    The Bilingual Education Act
    The Bilingual Education Act was signed by Lyndon B. Johnson on January 2, 1968. BEA was introduced by Texas senator Ralph Yarborough to address the needs of student who speak limited English. The act was an amendment to the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. The act was replaced by No Child Left Behind in 2002.

    The The National Association of Bilingual Education is a non profit organization that was founded in 1975. The NABE advocates for both excellence for bilingual/ multilingual students and educational equality on a global scale.

    In September of 1994 President Bill Clinton signed the Improving America's Schools Act (IASA) which reathorized the Elementary and Secondary Act of 1965. It addressed reform in Charter Schools, Title 1 programs, Impact Aid, Educational technology, and drug-free schools.

    In May of 2016, President Obama issues and tells school districts around the nation "to allow transgender students to use the bathroom that matches their gender identity." While the decree is not a law the president did indicate that districts that do not follow suit may lose federal funding or judicial action.
