    The United States Supreme Court decided a case that determined prayer in school violates the First Amendment. This was a first step toward the acceptance of differing cultures. It began the work to fight against the discrimination of individuals based on their cultural and religious beliefs.

    Coral Way Elementary was the first of many schools to open with the goal of bilingual education. This opening came after many Cuban children had immigrated to the United States due to the Cuban Revolution.

    The higher education act was created in order to create federal funding to make available to students seeking education after secondary school. This created programs, grants and loans to help with the financial burden that higher education may create.

    The Indian Education Act worked toward the establishment of better approaches to educating American Indian and Alaskan Native students. The goal was to create better opportunity and create more cultural understanding related to the special needs of these students.

    The Equal Educational Opportunities Act was passed with the goal of diminishing any barriers to students access to education. This was important to both access to education and to the avoidance of segregation.

    The Education of All Handicapped Children Act was enacted to create a better system for the education of handicapped children. It made available free public education and protected the rights of handicapped children and their families.

    The Refugee Act of 1980 was created to resettle refugees, as a result of humanitarian crisis, in the United States. Part of this resettlement effort focused on making education available to the children of these immigrants.

    This was enacted in order to create educational standards across the United States. It created standardized testing, but also introduced penalties for schools that did not meet the standards of this testing.

    2009 - The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009
    The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009 was enacted in order to provide funding to the public schools of the United States. It provided schools with the opportunity to prevent the layoff of teachers and to modernize schools.
