    Created the first establishment for the mentally ill in Spain. Prior to this, they let them have freedom unless they were dangerous. They did not understand the mentally ill, but they did know they needed to be seperated from normal life.
  • 1600s

    Isolated them with criminals and other mentally ill patients. They were often chained to a wall in a dungeon
  • Late 1700s

    Most places gave mentally ill more freedom (i.e. exercise and better rooms) by no longer allowing chains to hold them down. However, there were still some that mistreated patients. This is the beginning point to where society started to understand the mentally ill.
  • 1900s

    The idea of "Talking thearpy" become widely used during this time. This type of treatment is still used today. This is where they really started to help them.
  • 1930s

    They used drugs, shock thearpy and surgery to treat illnesses such as schizophrenia. They would perfrom lobotanies on some patients, and purposely put them into a coma. A lobotany was the most used for. Here is the one of the debatable time periods because they treat them the worst but for a good reason, to help them recover.
