Radama is assasinated
Radama II, son of Queen Ranavalona, was assasinated. In 1861, he overthrew her rule and became the leader of Madagascar. In his two year rule, he opened the country back up to Christian missionaries. Marc Ravalomanana was elected with 52% of the vote. Originally the mayor of Tana, Ratsiraka refused to accept the situation. Ratsiraka set up another governement to go against Ravalomanana.
