History of Kahoolawe

Colonization

Sometime around the year 1000, Kahoolawe was settled by the Hawaiians, and small, temporary fishing communities were established along the coast.

Hawaiian culture begins

Dec 17, 1200

Hawaiians built stone platforms for religious ceremonies and set rocks upright as shrines for successful fishing trips.

Hakioawa

Aug 18, 1300

Larget settlement is established on the north east face of the island.Around a population of a 120 people lived there.

Warfare

Jul 25, 1420

Violent wars among competing chiefs laid waste to the land and led to a decline in the population. During the War of Kamokuhi, Kalaniʻōpuʻu, the ruler of the Big Island of Hawaii, raided and pillaged Kahoolawe in an unsuccessful attempt to take Maui from Kahekili II,

Missionaries

Oct 20, 1826

The first missionaries arrive in kahoolawe.Christian schools are establish and teach the people of kahoolawe the western education systems.

Early ranching

May 23, 1850

Kahoolawe was used as pasture for farmers sheep and goats. Land was givin the western ranchers in the west side of kahoolawe. Cows were a big problem becaus they grazed all the green from the kahoolawe valleys.

The Forest Reserve

Feb 6, 1911

The forest Reserve try to throw out goats from kahoolawe because of the constant destruction of vegitation. The request is denied and goats and cows continue there over graze.

Goat elimination

Mar 18, 1921

The forest reserve finally wins the conlict and goats are taken away from kahoolawe

Bombing zone

Aug 17, 1941

War breakout between america and japan after the pearhabor bombing. Kahoolawe is used a a bombing and torpedo target. The island is tormented by the bombs and the reef and land are filled with unexploded and chards of bombs.

Cleaning it up

May 25, 1967

funds and efforts start to clean the island from all the debri of bombs. They plant trees and native plants so that the island can be its orginal self again.

growing up

The island will be much greeneer than before and the trees would be meduim sappeling and grass would grow along the valleys

Clouds and animals

Jun 13, 2100

Trees and grass would be fully grown and the clouds would return and water the forest weekly. Native animals would be introduced again.

Reservations

May 23, 2150

Hawaiian reservation are then made to keep spiritual and culturale ways of the hawaiins people.

Erosion

Much of kahoolawes land is sucked by the sea and erosian slowlys takes the cliffs of kahoolawe.

Tourism and hotels

Likely the island will be taken by the tourism orginization and make a resort that might effect the enviroment.
