History of Jazz

  • African Americans start making Blues music

    The blues was born in the Southern United States by African Americans. The music was created to represent the pain and injustice they faced.
  • The US Military Brings Back European Instruments Back From War

    In 1998 the US military defeated Spain in war. The troops returning from the Caribbean brought back European instruments when they landed in New Orleans. These instruments were sold on the black market for cheap and soon every neighborhood in the city would have a brass band.
  • Louis Armstrong is born

    On August 4th 1901, Louis Armstrong was born. He is said to be one of the most influential artists in music history and began playing the cornet when he was 13.
  • Ragtime Beings to Grow

    Ragtime is continuing to grow among the black population. This causes the public interaction between blacks and whites to increase.
  • The First Black Orchestra tours outside New Orleans

    From 1913-1917 the Original Creole Band was the first black orchestra to tour outside of New Orleans.
  • St. Louis Blues is Written

    Pianist W.C Handy wrote St.Louis Blues. (which we played in stage band)
  • One of the First Songs With "Jazz" in the Name is Written

    In September 1917 William Handy recorded one of the first songs with "jazz" in its title: Benton's Overstreet Jazz Dance.
  • The "End" of Ragtime

    A Ragtime producer named James Stark goes out of business which signaled the end of Ragtime.
  • Jazz is Banned in Berlin

    Jazz is banned from a Berlin radio station with the rise of the Nazi Party in Germany.
  • Sexism in Jazz is Challenged

    Barry Ulanov, a critic, speaks out against sexism in jazz.
