History of Human Rights

  • The War Measures Act

    The War Measures Act
It is the greatest legacy for human rights movement. It gave power to the Canadian government to maintain security and order during the war. I choose this even to be included in my timeline because it shows how an Act acted against those who were in Canada. These people in the photograph were treated unfairly due to their status (German) and this issue wasn't resolved till after war. Picture: (Hoogeveen and Murdoch, 190)
  • Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau

He was the Prime Minister at the time when the War Measures Act took place.

  • PM William L MacKenzie King

    PM William L MacKenzie King
He was the person who passed the old age pension act.

  • Libel Act

    Libel Act
It was passed in Manitoba. It allows legal action to take place to stop personal attacks against race or religion that creates hate, disrespect or mockery. I found this event important because this Act allowed legal action to be taken place then someone was treated unfairly. It acted as a right against discrimination in a way.

Winston Churchill (British Prime Minister) and Franklin Roosevelt (US president) signed the Atlantic Charter. Its purpose is to fight against all fascism. What would have happened to Canada if there was no fight of fascism?

I included Winston Churchill as an important person because he helped fight against dictatorship. If the treaty hadn't been placed then there could have been a dictatorship in Canada.

    The Charter
-Delegates from over 50 countries went to San Francisco and created the UN.
-These 50 countries represented 80 percent of the world's population that wanted a peaceful world.
-The charter was created and put to a vote. I choose the charter because it is a big part of the allied system. These 50 countries joined together to make the Charter which gave people the rights that they deserved.

  • Aboriginal Rights

    Aboriginal Rights
During the first world war, aboriginal people that had fought were given the right to vote and no one else. WW2 it had been the same until 1960 aboriginals were allowed to vote in federal elections.
I thought that this is an important event for human rights because Aboriginals/First Nations were the first people and not giving them the right to live on their land would be wrong. The treaty formed is something that brought Canadians and Aboriginals together Picture: (Diefenbaker Canada Centre)
  • John Diefenbaker

    John Diefenbaker
He helped with aboriginal rights benefiting the friendship between Canadians and Aboriginals.
I put PM John because he had helped the bond between Canadians and Aboriginals stay in place. This was considered on of his greatest accomplishments. Without him putting in Aboriginal Rights there may have been another war.

    Rosa Parks
She was the first black person to fight for their rights after sitting on the white part of a bus.

    Martin Luther King Jr.
He met with the PM for the Voting Rights Act which gave African- Americans the right to vote.
I included Martin Luther King Jr. because he is the person who stood up for his kind and came to a foreign country to establish rights. Without his help may African-Americans may not have gotten what they deserved.

    Employment Equality Act
The purpose of the employment equality act is to achieve equality in the workplace and no one is denied employment. I thought that this was an important event for human rights because the pay for men and women were different and the job types. Having this Act in place assures equality for everyone.

    Picture: (Socialist)
  • Hassan Diab

    Hassan Diab
From Canada's 1999 Extradition Act has caused mayhem regarding the fact it was used unfairly against Hassan Diab.
I included Hassan Diab because the Extradition Act was used against a French Canadian and that had caused some controversy about who the Extradition Act benefits. He shows how some Acts may not help and cause confusion as to why it was put into place.
