The First Food Stamp Program
On May 16, 1939, the first food stamp was given out. The program allowed people on relief to buy the same amount of orange stamps, that could be used for any food, equal to their normal food purchase. Every dollar worth of orange stamps that someone bought they received fifty cents worth of blue stamps. The blue stamps could only be used for food that was surplus. -

As a field of study and discipline, home economics began to change to better accommodate the everchanging society in the 1950s and 1960s. -

In 2001, the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences said that the definition of family is, "two or more persons who share resources, share responsibility for decisions, share values and goals, and have a commitment to one another over time." -
Same Sex Marriage
In July of 2015, same-sex couples that are married gained equal access to all federal benefits given to opposite-sex couples in the United States. -
