Justin Smith Morrill, and the Morrill Act
This act called for the establishment of western land-grant colleges specializing in agriculture and mechanics. This act was sponsored by Congressman Justin Smith Morrill (pictured). -
First Land-Grant University
Kansas State University was the first college to open under the Morrill Act. Soon, many more colleges were opened. Land-Grant colleges in Arkansas are University of Arkansas and University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. -
Ellen Swallow Richards Establishes the Women's Labratory
Richards pioneered the study of home economics after graduating from the Massachusetts Institution of Technology. She is the mother of the field. -
Rumford Kitchen at Chicago World's Fair
This kitchen setup became a model for the foundations of nutrition and the study of healthy eating behaviors. -
Lake Placid Conference
A gathering in New York where educators met and coined the term "Home Economics" to define the field. -
AHEA created
American Home Economics Association was created and began to make progress for the field. -
Ellen Swallow Richards Dies
Richards passing was the end of the mother of Home Economics, however, she left a thriving field of study that had much more work to be done. -
Smith Lever Act
This act enabled a public communication extension program to update land-grant universities on discoveries, experiments, and practices within their areas of study. -
Smith-Hughes Act
This act promoted precollegiate training for specialized trades and home economic practices. This led to vocational training, and promoted careers with training without having to pursue a university degree (pictured is a meeting for Future Farmers of America, which was supported by this act). -
Vocational Education Act
Funding was increased greatly, and supported work study programs. Within this act, there were demands for businesses to connect with vocational programs to provide pathways to careers for students of the training. -
First Preschool Program Initiated by President Johnson
Headstart, the nation's first public preschool program, was advocated for by the AHEA(American Home Economics Association) and set in place by President Lyndon Johnson. -
Vocational Education Amendments of 1968-1976
These amendments recognized the national economic issues, and further supported students financially. Funding was especially increased to students at risk and students with disabilities. -
Title IX Creation in Education Amendment
Title IX was a big step forward is sexual harassment and discrimination. This helped ensure that all areas of study were open to men and women, too. -
The First National Nutrition Month
This was significant to FACS because the government was truly beginning to adopt the practice of nutrition and healthy eating. -
Carl Perkins, and the Carl Perkins Act
Carl Perkins was a democratic member of the House of Representatives, and was highly motivated to improve education and work programs for the nation. Amending the Vocational Education Act, the Perkins Act further supported financial stability of training and education programs. Another large part of this act was its role in establishing Human Resources divisions to protect both workers and employers. -
Home Economics to FACS
The name of the profession was changed in an effort to further detail the many layers and categories of the field. -
No Child Left Behind Act
This education act protected underprivileged children and communities and set standards for passing grade levels. -
Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act
President Barack Obama signed a reformed act to set standards for school lunches and making food readily available to children in need. -
President Trump Proposes Slashing the Department of Education Budget
During Trump's first budget proposal, he outlined a plan to reduce the Department of Education by nearly 40%, threatening state employees over programs such as the Office for Civil Rights.
