History of Education in America

  • Public Education Developed in Europe

    -School linked to the bible.
    -Labor intensive
    -Servitude
    -obedience,
    -suppression
    -show of reverence
(Gray, 2008) This event is linked to my teaching as I will be teaching in a public school system.
  • Period: to

Massachusetts first Colony to mandate schooling

    Horse Mann-Common Schools Movement
    - Higher quality education for poorer communities
(Saas, 2024) This event relates to my teaching as many Montana communities are in lower income areas and a quality education is still vital to a student's success.
  • Period: to

Public School Evolves to more Conventional Schooling

More humane, less corporal, lessons more secular, six-hour days, 1 hour of homework and often additional lessons from other sources. (Gray, 2008) This event relates to my teaching as learning is a constant, whether in school or at home or in any other activities. Learning occurs in many different forms.
  • Period: to

    Secondary Education Movement

Increased enrollment in Secondary Schools. 9% graduated in 1910 increase to 50% in 1940. (Saas, 2024) This event relates to my teaching, and I am seeking my secondary education certificate. Without this event school may have ended before the introduction to secondary education.
  • Measurment Movement

Testing to determine above or below average students and identify by grade in school. (Saas, 2024). This event relates to me as teacher because it is critical and part of the Danielson Framework, that we as teachers, design assessments and use those assessments in instruction and communication.
  • Elementary/Secondary Education Act

Gave equal access to quality education and provided federal funding for low-income student to receive the same education regardless of financial status. (Saas, 2024). This event relates to my teaching as schools today are still receiving funding from the federal government to ensure equal access to education.
  • Standards Movement

Created Standards for education and outlined what students should know at each grade level and was also used as a measurement of a well preforming school and a struggling school (Schwartz, 2023) This event relates to my teaching in that standards are still placed in instruction to determine grade levels and performance, although they have evolved and changed over time.
  • Period: to

School is Hardwork, forced and matter of inculcation "discovery"

Distinction between work and play. Work (school) must be done before play. (Gray,2008). This event relates to my teaching as it is still taught today that we must work hard first then we can play. We recognize that play is important and vital in learning and is now incorporated into the learning environment.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

Created high stakes testing to ensure school's accountability to the learning levels of students and penalizes schools that do not meet the standards set out by NCLB. (Saas, 2024). This event relates to my teaching as this act is still very much in practice today and determines funding for schools from the federal government.
  • Period: to

    Covid-19 Pandemic

Shifted schools to utilize online tool such as zoom to conduct online schooling. Teachers realized that the online tools were not a replacement, however, allowed more time to engage and mentor students. (Fitzpatrick, 2023). This event will probably relate strongly to my teaching as it will likely be a hybrid of in class and online. With the use of online tools, I can work with students differently\and can create more engagement throughout the classroom.
