    At this time most schools were neither free or public and only the most privileged continued to college. One of the main studies in schools at this time was the Protestant Bible and prayers.

  • Impact of John Dewey

    Also known as the father of Progressive Movement. Had many knew ideas for teaching students which were; focusing on the whole child, exercising body and mind, learning by doing, exploring nature, and preparing students to participate in a democratic society.

    Was a period of social activism and political reform for America. Some of the major issues of the reform were to eliminate problems caused by industrialization, corruption in government, urbanization, and immigration.

    In the 20th century the population of Immigrants doubled because of all those longing for the "American dream" and a better education. Most of the immigrants that came were Irish Catholic.

    The impact of the war increased education opportunities for women because the men were leaving their occupations to go and fight.
  • Civil Rights Movement & War on Poverty

    The Civil Rights Movement was the social movement to end discrimination and gain equality for African Americans. President Lyndon B Johnson proposed the War on Poverty, to have the government play a higher role in education and healthcare.

    A lawsuit that was won over discrimination and segregation of African Americans. They fought for better and equal education to stop segregation in the schools.   • Sputnik and NDEA

    Sputnik was the first Earth orbiting satellite that was launched be the Soviet Union. When this happened the U.S. felt like they were lagging behind in education and so the NDEA established federal funding for higher education

    Lyndon B Johnson played a major role in this act with his "war on poverty". It was funded more than one billion dollars for elementary and secondary education. It emphasized equal opportunity and helped those low-income students in the local school districts.

    This ensured that Americans with disabilities were provided with a free appropriate public education.     A time when the world was moving forward and they raised the bar on education standard and what students were being taught.
  • No Child Left Behind

    Requires all schools that receive federal funding to do standardized testing for students to determine if they meet the requirements to advance to the next school grade.
