The Education Act: The Butler Act
This was a part of the major reform of the Education system after WWll. The Act provided free secondary education for all pupils, which was available up to the age of 18. Local Education Authorities were in charge of providing appropriate development programs to the local population. -
School leaving age
The 1944 Education Act enforced the school leaving age of 15. -
General Certificate of Education introduced
This qualification replaced the older School Certificate (SC) and Higher School Certificate (HSC). -
The Certificate of Secondary Education
introduced in England and Wales to recognise the range of pupils' abilities. -
Education Act: LEA grants
Grants from the Local Education Authroity were made inaccesible to postgraduate students. -

The school leaving age raised to 16. This was to compensate for the rising number of unemployed caused by the economic downturn of 1970s. -
Sex Discrimination Act and Race Relations Act
These two acts were put in place to erradicate discriminations due to gender and race. It promoted equality within schools and other working environments. -

Gaining a PGCE qualification, prior to teaching, was made compulsory. -
SEN statements
Special Educational Needs 'statements' were first intorduced in the report called the Warnock Report. -
The National Curriculum
The National Curriculum was first introduced. It set out the framework of the content to be taught to pupils at school. -

I was born at the Kandy General Hospital in Sri Lanka. -
SATs
Introduction of the SAT tests. Pupils were required to sit these tests in both year 6 and year 9. These were also known as the national curriculum tests. -

This private body for school inspections was established. -

Started Pre-School
I started at Shokanji Kindergarten in Kandy, Sri Lanka. I was there for three months before withdrawing due to personal circumstances. -
Mahamaya Girls' College, Kandy
I attended this Buddhist Girls' school in my home town from the age of 6 to 9. Each year, I was there for 6 months and abroad for the remainder of the year.
The school is one of the highest ranking girls' schools in the country and it follows very strict guidelines. Compulsory subjects taught included Mathematics, Science, Sinhalese and Buddhism. Engish was available as a subject but the department lacked qualified English teachers untill 2010, when it was made into an English medium school. -

University of Wolverhampton
I began the Subject Konwledge Enhancement course in prapration for the start of the Secondary Chemistry PGCE with Wolverhampton University and Wood Green Academy.
