First school for disabled children opened
The American Asylum for the Deaf and the Dumb (unable to speak) Persons in Hartford, Connecticut, was the first of its kind; it paved the way for other special education schools that opened shortly after. The idea for this school was started by two well-off parents who had deaf children and wanted them to go to school and get an education. -
Common School Movement

Horace Mann was often called "The Father of the Common School Movement," This movement had the goal of improving education using tax funded schools with more prepared teachers. The fought for a free education for all students regardless of class, wealth,or heratige.This led to the creation of Normal schools.These were what they called teacher preparation institutes. -
Gallaudet College
It was the first College for the Deaf in the United States. They became federally funded when President Lincoln signed the Charter bill into Law. -
Committee Of Ten

The Committee of Ten was created by the NEA to look at how current American high schools run and to make recommendations on how they should do things in the future. In 1894, the Committee made recommendations to create curriculum standards, and they supported teaching traditional subjects with eight years of elementary followed by four years of high school. -
Brown V. Board of Education

The U.S Supreme Court decided in Brown v. The Board of Education of Topeka case that it was unconstitutional for Educational Institutes to segregate children by race. This was the end of the "separate but equal" standards. -
Head Start program begins
Head Start began as an 8-week summer program. Head Start's objective was to break the cycle of poverty by offering low-income children aged 3-5 a program that met social, emotional, Psychological, health, and nutritional needs.

Title IX of the Civil Rights act
Was signed into law by President Nixon; it required that no person be excluded from participating in, denied the benefit of, or be subject to discrimination based on sex. This means schools couldn't restrict based on sex entrance into school or sports. -
Education for all Handicapped Children Act created (IDEA)
IDEA was created to protect the rights of children with disabilities, giving them the same free, appropriate public education as other children. It has been revised many times since its creation in 1975.

A Nation at Risk report
This report stated that America was failing to educate its students well. The report recommended that teacher's preparation and pay needed to be looked at; it also said that schools should adopt new Standards. With this report, the Standard Movement began.

Columbine High School Massacre

The Columbine shooting was, at the time, the worst school shooting. It happened in Littleton, Colorado. Two male students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, went on a shooting spree, killing 13 and injuring more than 20 others before turning their guns onto themselves in suicide. -
No Child Left Behind Act
President George W Bush signed at Hamilton High School in Ohio. The NCLB Act held schools accountable for how kids learned and achieved.
