    In 1795 the first genral state aid was provided to common schools

    in 1834 the first program of aid to academies with teacher training departments was adopted

  • 1865 Exams

    In 1865 the Regents examination systems was started
  • 1903 Age

    In 1903 the age for compulsory attendance was raised to 16
  • 1954 Civil rights

    In 1954 separate schools for Indian children were abolished
  • 1974 Disabilities

    In 1974 Legislation was passed to prohibit discrimination against the disabled in education
  • 1984 Grades to play sports

    In 1984 school officials report that students are now required to maintain a C average with no failures in order to participate in extracurricular activities
  • 1990 ADA

    In 1990 the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became a law, essentially a civil rights law, it prohibits discrimination against those with disabilities in all areas, including education
  • 2003 Online Education

    In 2003 the International Association for K-12 Online Learning (INACOL), a non- profit organization dedicated to enhancing K-12 online education is "launched as a formal corporate entity".
