  • Northwest Land Ordinance

    Northwest Land Ordinance
    The northwest land ordinance was passed by the confederation congress. It created the northwest territory. It influenced education in a few ways. The first is that as part of the ordinance congress required a university for statehood. This shows control over education by the national government. This ordinance also promoted freedom of slaves which helps in civil rights movements later on and greatly changes education.

    Secondary School Movement
    The Secondary School Movement began in 1810, but lasted about 30 years. The United States found that they needed to prepare college bound students with basic skills in the main subjects and soon many secondary schools were formed.

    The first edition of Webster's Dictionary was published.
    It was the first American Dictionary and changed the way English was taught here.

    Horace Mann
    horace Mann was appointed secretary of the Board of Education in 1837. He became an education reformer.
