Start of New Beginnings
Boston Latin School was the first school to open in all of the thirteen colonies the oldest public school in the nation. Focused on the values based on family, religion, and community. Academics weren't highly taught, girls only could learn to read in 1635.

Furthering Educational Years
Breaking the barrier of Elementary education, the United States opened the first high school. The high school was opened and named Boston English.

Building Strong Foundations
The Federal Department of Education helped set a strong foundation of standards for the nation's education. This was established in 1867.

Implementing Education
In the 1900s, a lot of basic structure was established for kids to learn. Thirty-one states required all kids from the ages of eight to fourteen to go to school. However, by 1918 every state made it mandatory for kids to pass elementary school.

Before 1905, California did not allow schooling for Chinese immigrants. In 1905, the U.S. made California open that option for immigrants.
