  • Settlement of Jamestown

    Jamestown was the first settlement in America. This was the beginning of new life in the U.S.
  • First Latin Grammar School

    The BostonLatin School was one of the first schools to open in America. The School was open to higher-class males to educate them so they can perform leadership roles in the church, state, or courts.
  • Harvard: Americas First College

  • Grammatical Institute of the English Language

    These were a series of dictionaries that changed the way modern textbooks were written.
  • The Blackboard Was Invented

    A man named James Pillans invented the world first blackboard by hanging a slab of slate on the wall!
  • First Public High School

    The first government owned public high school open in Boston, MA. This high school is still open today.
  • New Massachusetts Law

    Massachusetts created a law that stated that all grades of public school are open to all people free of charge.
  • First University to Admit Women

    Oberlin College was the first to allow women to enroll. These women were not allowed to earn a bachelor's degree but, were allowed to receive diplomas from the Ladies Course.
  • Mount Holyoke Female Seminary

    This was the first only female college in the U.S. At this point in time only white higher class men were granted higher education. So this was a big deal!
  • Teachers Education School

    The first school for teachers opened in Lexington, Massachusetts.
  • Putting an End to Homeschooling

    The state of Massechussetts decided that parents might not make the best teachers for their children. This is why all children were forced into school.
  • Mandetory Attendance Law

    Massachusetts passed the first mandatory attendance law. This law required students to attend school for a certain amount of time.
  • Indianola Junior High Opens

    This was the first junior high school in the country. The 1900's is when people began to realized the flexibility the different ways to educate. Different school were opening up based on age, race and even gender.
  • The First Year of SAT's

    This was a dreadful year for students because the first scholastic aptitude test was introduced to high schoolers. A terrible fun fact: the SAT's were first invented to prove that Jewish people, Mediterranean people and people of color were less intelligent than white people.
  • Truman Commission Report

    This doubled college enrollment and established community colleges which enabled more people to get a free public education.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    The sparks the beginning of the civil rights movement! The Supreme Court finally outlawed racial segregation in public schools. This basically was a battle to allow black and white children to go to school together.
  • Little Rock Nine

    This was the first group of African American students to enroll into a public school. The nine teenagers enrolled too Little Rock Central High School. The students where greeted with an angry mob of white people who tried to prevent them from entering the school building.
  • Learning Disabilities Association of American Begins

    Makes public education FREE for special needs students and was a big help in beginning special education programs in schools.
  • End of Male/Female Segregation

    The tilte lX of the Education Amendments states that it is prohibited to discriminate based on sex in all aspects of education.
  • Jones International University

    The first school in the world to exist entirely online.
