    This was the first of many public schools. Right now most of the schools are public but back then that was the first. It was the start of a very popular trend for parents to send their kids to public school.
  • Harvard College was established

    Harvard College was established
    This was the first college ever and now there are a plethora of in every state. Now tons of kids go to college but before Harvard there was nothing of the sort in America.
  • Plessy v. Ferguson

    Plessy v. Ferguson
    This law enforced "separate but equal". This made it legal for there to be white schools and black schools. This law was later changed due to keep schools more equal in terms of supplies, funding, recourses, and teachers.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    This case ended segregation in American schools. They made the saying "separate but equal" unconstitutional. This was a major building block in reducing racism in education.
  • Public schools have banned the Bible

    Public schools have banned the Bible
    Public schools could no longer have the Bible in their libraries. It was also illegal to teach religion in public schools after this event.
  • Title IX passed

    Title IX passed
    This law efficiently made girls and boys equal in every aspect of education and school funded sports. The number of sports must be equal for boys and girls. Discrimination was no longer allowed based on sex after this date.

    After this law passed there was no more discrimination towards special needs children. That law also lead to many more laws to help special needs students in schools.

    A Nation at Risk
    The nation was not doing good at all academically and this was a warning that things were headed downhill in education. This allowed the nation to look at and help education more than ever and schools are still benefiting from this.
  • Columbine High School Massacre

    Columbine High School Massacre
    This was a school shooting that killed 15 people and injured 21 people. The 15 people include the two shooters who committed suicide. This has changed school security and the feeling of safety in schools forever. It also has encouraged a lot more shootings in schools.
  • The No Child Left Behind act was signed by George W. Bush

    The No Child Left Behind act was signed by George W. Bush
    The Act required states to develop assessments in basic skills. To receive federal school funding, states had to give these assessments to all students at select grade levels. This really has helped the poorer schools and has made a huge difference.
