Common School Movement
Horace Mann took charge in this movement to ensure that all children were able to receive a basic education by using local tax money. This influence of his spread among the states quickly. -
Meyer V. State of Nebraska
Nebraska had passed a law prohibition teaching grade school children any other language except English. The court declared this was unconstitutional saying it violated the 14th amendment. The Due Process Clause was violated. Meyer argued that students should be able to learn other languages and families should be able to choose the upbringing of their children. -
Brown V. Board of Education

Little Rock Nine
A group of African American teens who were put into an all white school for the first time. It was a struggle, and took almost a month just to get the students into school due to the amount of angry people outside, but the president called in the National Guard to escort the students into school and they were finally successful. These students were the first test of the ruling in Brown V. Board of Education which made segregation in schools unconstitutional. -
Vocational Education Act
This act provided schools with grants to further the technology they had in their classrooms. This helped to advance learning. It also helped maintain vocational programs in schools. -
Higher Education Act
This strengthened the resources that all colleges were able to provide financial assistance and other resources to students. This helped create a better society, as more people were able to attend college after high school. Lyndon B. Johnson signed the act. Title IX

Individual with Disabilities Education Act
This act made sure that students with disabilities were offered a free, public education. It also requires that special education is offered to these students. They should make accommodations to fit each child's specific needs. In 1997, changes were made to the act regarding ages of developmental delay. -
No Child Left Behind Act

Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting
A total of 28 people were shot and killed at school in Connecticut. The events after caused nation wide attention. Schools began to become more worried about the safety of their students. The president became involved with some of the Sandy Hook students. Gun control also spiraled out of this situation.
