  • First Public High School

    Founded on April 23, 1635, Boston Latin School was the first public school. Opened to the public in 1821. The idea of this school was to help children learn how to read, and proper grammar, and help create a new educated world. The first sessions were held at the headmasters' houses, later on, the school was added on too. This was the backbone of public education.

  • Havard College Establish

    On September 6, 1636, John Havard established the first major college of the colonies. This is so important to education because Havard is an Ivy League school. Harvard has also been one of the most diverse and influential schools. Many native Americans attended the school, and it is woven into the deep history of the school. Harvard University
  • First School For the Deaf

    On April 15, 1817, The first school for deaf people was founded and established in Hartford, Connecticut. This is an important event for education because it opened up the idea of learning to others. It did not limit education.

  • Civil Rights Act of 1866

    The Civil Rights Act of 1866 declared all citizens born in the United States to be citizens. This act was important because it made black people citizens of America. This opened up the opportunity for diversity in education and it created more educated citizens.

  • Dawes Act of 1887

    The Dawes Act of 1887 allowed the government to break up tribal lands. They wanted to lead Natives to mainstream media America. This would include sending children to boarding schools and teaching them "the proper way" to live. Things like teaching a certain religion, teaching kids certain ways to talk, and how to act and dress. They were ridding the Natives of their culture through education.

  • Plessy Vs. Ferguson 1896

    Plessy Vs. Ferguson was a Supreme Court case in the South that deemed segregation laws constitutional. This made it impossible for desegregation in schools for another 50 years.

    Education for all Handicapped Children
    The Education for all Handicapped Children Act guaranteed a free and appropriate education for all children. This included special needs. This act was passed in every state, it opened up education diversity.
