1968-First Public Lending Library in North America
St. Phillips Episcal Church (A parsonage provincial library) in Sorth Carolina was the first public lending library.This shaped education by allowing people who may not have had access to books, it provided a vunue for the opportunity to read and explore a variety of literature out side of the school systems. -

Horrace Mann elected secretary of Mass. Board of Ed.
Education reformer Horace Mann Served in the Mass. House of Representatives and Senate before he was appointed Mass. Secretary of Education. Mann went on to the U.S. House of Rep. promoting an agenda of public education and "normal schools" to train teachers. -

1958-National Defense Education Act
In 1958 President Eisenhower's congress passes NDEA. The purpose of the act was to strengthen math and science in schools. -

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin. -
1965 Project Head Start
In May of 1965 President Lyndon B. Johnson announces Project Head Start in the White House Rose Garden. Head Start provides preshcools for low-income children. -
The Elementary and Secondary Education Act
This Act was passed as part of the "War on Poverty." ESEA was created to provide equal access to education and establishes hight standards and accountability. It authorizes federally funded education programs that are administered by the states. This Act was renamed the "No Child Left Behind Act" -
1975-Ed.for All Handicapped Children Act, Public Law 94-142
Signed into law by Gerald Ford on November 29, 1975. This law guarantees a free appropriate public education to each child with a disability, FAPE. -
1991-The SMART Board is introduced
1991- SMART Tech. creates worlds first interacitve whiteboard.
The SMART Board allows users to input data through the use of plastic pens that contain no ink, the user's hands, a wireless mouse or pointing device. The software for the smartboard is loaded onto a local computer or network, where smartboard-compatible software can then be called upon for use on the screen.
