History of Democracy

  • Period: 509 BCE to 27 BCE

    Rome; ruled by government where citizens voted in their representatives.

    This event marks the start of democracy.
    Citizens have the ability to choose their own leaders.
  • Parliament

    U.S Constitution established a democratic government where citizens vote for representatives to make laws and a president to execute the laws.
    This was important because this system of government is still being used in America today.
  • British North America Act

    When this act was created and signed, this created the Canadian Confederation. Recognized the provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec as the nation of Canada.
    This act is a very important step in the history of democracy because it created Canada as a new, self-governing federation that led to its independence and its own government from Britain.
  • Secret Ballots

    This is a part in the history of democracy because it marks the first time secret ballots were used in an election. These secret ballots allowed citizens to anonymously cast their vote. Important because it shows political independence and freedom.
  • Saskatchewan and Alberta.

    Canada introduced two new provinces, Saskatchewan and Alberta.
    This is significant because this increased the population and land that our democratic government would rule over.
  • Person’s Case

    This is the part in history where 5 Woman fought to the British Privy Council, and officially got woman considered “people” by law.
    This is a part of democratic history because it was a huge step in our government in creating equal gender rights and laws.
  • Independance

    Statue of Westminster recognizes Canada as an independent country from Britain.
    This let Canada deal with their government decisions/issues on their own, giving Canada more freedom and led to our current government.
  • Bill of Rights and Freedom

    This law was created to fight against discrimination of any kind (religion, gender, color, national origin).
    This marks importance as a part of democratic history because it is still a huge part of Canada’s laws and values today, set the standards and beginnings of Canadians rights.
  • Canada Act

    This was when the Constitution Act, Canada's constitution was approved by the British Parliament, making Canada completely independent.
    This is very significant in democratic history because it gave the Canadian government more control and independence over their constitution, decisions, and country. This led to our government today.
  • Homeless People

    People without a permanent home are now allowed to vote in Federal elections. This is important because it represents the lower class.
