    Thomas Jefferson recognized that education was the conerstone of the country and that every citizen should be educated according to his desire in life. Some would be labor workers and others would be getting an education. So this was the start of college.
  • Boston English High School

    Boston English High School
    The first public high school opened in 1821. Boston English High School. This school was primarily created as a vocational school in order to support the growing needs of workers in the Industrial Revolution. This school educated working class boys in business, mechanics, and engineering.
  • Smith-Hughes Vocational Education Act of 1917

    Smith-Hughes Vocational Education Act of 1917
    This act provided federal funds in the education of people who were beginning a career on the farm. This was the beginning of vocational education as we know it. Woodlawn High School in Virginia was the first secondary school to offer agricultural education classes.

    The Cardinal Principle of Secondary Education

    The Commission on the Reorganization of Secondary Education issued The Cardinal Principles of Secondary Education. This laid the ground work for modern high schools. This was the first of "general studies"curriculum.
  • Future Farmers of American (FFA)

    Future Farmers of American (FFA)
    Because of the Smith-Hughes Vocational Education Act of 1917, in 1928, Future Farmers of America (FFA) was established as an organization for students who participated in agriculture education classes.
  • Distributive Education

    Distributive Education
    George-Deen Act of 1936 provided the first federal aid for the practice of distributive workers upon the request of local citizens. These workers were able to gain school credit while working to learn a trade such sales or pharmacy. This was the first federal aid for schools that allowed students to work instead of go to school.

    Charles A Prosser
    Charles A Prosser was instrumental in the Smith-Hughes Act of 1917. He stated in 1945 that 20% of the population would benefit from college preparation and 20% of the population would be skilled in some sort of labor but the other 60% still deserved to be educated with "Life Adjustment" center curriculum to prepare them for the world.

    Sputnik shock soon began as America found itself potentially falling behind other countries in academic skills and knowledge of math and science. The policymakers used this shock to create new curriculum, better facilities and added math and science curriculum across the board.

    Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972
    This Amendment prohibits discrimination against women. In education, this meant that women were able to participate in all kinds of vocational education, and were not to be discriminated again.
  • Civil Rights Movement

    Civil Rights Movement
    Ensured that all students had equal access to public education and graduation rates improved. This moved along education for all students to have access to both college and career readiness curriculum whether related to vocational education or college preparation.
  • A Nation At Risk

    A Nation At Risk
    School curriculum needed more rigorous and measurable standards. We as a nation were falling behind other countries. This rapid decline was measured by numerous means, but a great measure of the decline was from the verbal scores of those that took the SAT. This was a wake up call that our country had to use more dependable and rigorous standards for all curriculum.
  • Perkins Act/ Applied Technology Education Act

    Perkins Act/ Applied Technology Education Act
    Carl D. Perkins authorized the largest amount of funds ever for vocational education. In this act, money was given for poor and handicapped students and career guidance and counseling. Schools organized their career course in sequences in order to promote career education and college and career readiness.
