The Pacific Scandal erupts: Prime Minister Macdonald accused of corruption in negotiations over a transcontinental railway. His government will be forced to resign. -
Riel Granted Amnesty
Riel is granted amnesty with the condition that he be banished for five years. There would be too many upset followers if he was executed -

Intercolonial Railway
The Intercolonial Railway, growing out of the Halifax-Truro line, links central Canada and the Maritimes. This is a huge achievement because it makes the transportation of goods and people across such a vast country much easier. -

Scottish-born Alexander Graham Bell, who has been working on the invention of the telephone since 1874, makes the world's first long-distance call, from Brantford to Paris, Ontario -
