Olympics
Basketball becomes an official Olympic sport. The United States defeats Canada 19-8 for the gold medal. The games were played in Berlin, Germany. -
Start of the NBA
Six teams from the NBL join the BAA. This results in 17 teams to form the National Basketball Association (NBA). They decide to name Maurice Podloff as President. -
First African American
Duquesne University's Charles Cooper becomes the first African American to be drafted by an NBA team for the Boston Celtics. -

McDonald's Championship
