Vanga Kingdom (1500 BC - 500 BC)
Current day Bangladesh can be traced back to the Vanga Kingdom which was an early age Iron Age Kingdom! The word Bangla actually comes from Banga which was another way to say Vanga. Bengal Subah (1501 - 1700)
Bengal Subah, also known as Mughal Bengal, ruled over current day Bangladesh and the West Bengal region in India. They were predominantly Islamic which changed the region from their Hindu and Buddhist traditions. The region was wealthy holding 12% of the world's GDP. Nawab of Bengal (1717-1772)
After the fall of Mughal Bengal, Nawab of Bengals were still set to rule over the state. They were all proto-industrialization continuing to bring riches to the region. They traded gun-powder, cloth, silk, and so much more. Soon, their riches and factories would attract Europeans to battle for the territory! The Battle of Plassey
The Battle of Plassey would bring the East India Company to rule Bengal! Robert Clive knew in order to rule Bengal, he needed to over through the current Nawab, Siraj-ad-daula. During battle, Siraj was killed and replaced by Mir Jafar! Partition of Bengal
Bengal is now known as their own independent state. They are still part of India, but they hold their own title! Lord Curzon announced it on July 20th, 1905. The partition was due to the majority of muslims living in East Bengal. East Bengali Muslim's believed this would create better opportunities for them! West and East Pakistan
After the devastation of World War II, the United Kingdom couldn't afford to continue to rule India. India was also having problems in their own country. Muslims didn't want to be part of a Hindu state, so England divied up the country so that each region could be in one singular religion. Bengali Language Movement
The Bengali Language Movement began when Pakistan adopted Urdu as their main and only national language. The people in East Pakistan predominantly spoke Bengali. They wanted Bangla to be one of the national languages as well! There were lots of uprisings especially at the University of Dhaka. Police had to get involved and it was violent. Start of the Bangladeshi Liberation War
The political party, Awami League in East Pakistan, was creating lots of tension for West Pakistan. They wanted to become their own independent state. Operation Searchlight (03-26-1971 to 12-16-1971)
The ruthless, nationalistic driven genocide towards Bengali's was called Operation Searchlight. The Pakistani army, Bengali supporters of the Pakistani army were set to kill intellectuals and supporters and people of the Awami league, About 200,000 people were killed and 200,000 women were raped in genocidal rape. The People's Republic of Bangladesh
Finally after War and with India's help, Bangladesh gained their freedom. March 26, 1971 is when they were officially declared war against Pakistan! Their victory day was on December 16, 1971. Their constitution was officially passed the following year on December 16th! After doing this timeline project, I can say that I'm even more proud to be Bengali!
