The first people to explore Australia were the Dutch. They didn't settle there though. The Aborigines attacked them when they tried to explore. -

In 1770, James Cook, an English explorer, sailed around Australia to look for land. He found Australia and called it New South Wales. -
Penal colonies
England started sending British prisoners to Australia after losing dependence on America. Australia at the time was a penal colony.
