History of Architecture

  • Period: 1400 to

    Renaissance Era

    Originating in Europe, architecture in the Renaissance Era is characterized by it's domes, columns, round arches and tunnel vaults. It fits the need for order and proportion and is inspired by Vitruvius' writings, beauty and ancient Roman architecture.
  • Period: 1500 to

    Early Modern

    Most notable in Europe, the Early Modern era is what inspired the modern buildings we have today. They are characterized by being skyscrapers, by using very geometric patterns throughout and by a lack of ornaments. It is inspired by many movements in the time, such as the Arts and Craft movement.

    Antebellum Era

    The Antebellum Era is a neoclassical era, originating in South America between the War of 1812 and the Civil War. They are plantation homes and incorporate a lot of different styles, like for example, Greek and Classic revival. It is symmetrical and boxy.

    Art Deco

    This era took place in Europe and the United States, lasting only one decade. It is characterized by it's simple, clean and geometric shapes. It is known to show luxury and status, typically being made out of expensive materials and housing limited and expensive items. It is inspired by Art Nouveau, the Bauhaus and cubism.

    Green Buildings

    Green buildings are what the title's name suggests; environmentally friendly buildings. It is characterized by it's use of environmentally friendly materials and it is inspired by the need to save the planet.
