Birth of Photography

Emile Reynand invented the praxinoscope
After the invention of the phenakistoscope and zoetrope, Charles-Emile Reynand invented the praxinoscope in 1877. It was an improvement of the zoetrope by replacing its narrow viewing slits with inner circle of mirrors. This made it easier for more people to view.

Two french inventors and promeer manufactures, Auguste and Louis Lumiere, created "Workers leaving Factory." This film was considered the 1st motion picture.

After seeing Lumiere's invention, George Melies made films. He was an expert in special effects at the time. He is knowned for his famous film "A Trip To The Moon."

Silent Movie Era of the 20's
Around the country there was a strong demand for animated cartoons in 1920. The 1st studios were located in New York. Later relocated to California because of the good weather.

Walt Disney's success in Animation
In 1923 Walt Disney follewed the lead of many animators and moved to South Califorina. He was one of the 1st animators to use sound in 1928. Disney used a symphony for music in his movie series "Silly Symphonies" in 1929. His 1st cartoon in color, "Flowers & Trees," was the 1st cartoon presented a Academy Award.

By the 1930's studios in California owned animation departments. Some of the mager studios are Disney Studios, Warner Brothers, Universal Studios and Metro Goldwyn Mayer.
