This is the history of animation from the 90's, 'till now. -
First animation ever.
This is the first step ever in animated history. It was a film titled Fantasmagorie, made by a French artist, Émile Cohl. -
First stop motion animations
Director Wladyslaw Starewicz, known as Ladislas Starevich, made the first stop animations consisting of dead insects & wires. And later in France, made his stop motion with expensive puppets. Types: clay-mation, puppet animation, cut-out, pixel, silhouette, and object. -
Cartoons become an industry
During the 1910's, cartoons became industry of their own. These cartoons became shown in theaters, which the most succesful producers of these where John Randolph Bray, along with his animator, Earl Hurd. -
The second group of animations.
More detailed hand-drawn animations with detailed backgrounds and characters, like the ones drawn by Winsor McCay: 1911 Little Nemo, the 1914 Gertie the Dinosaur, and the 1918 The Sinking of the Lusitania. -
Clay-mation
Stopmotion using clay to animate cartoons. Not used as often anymore. -
Hand drawn animation
The first type of animation used to make cartoons, with out the use of tools other than paper, pen, and pencil. Not commonly used. -
Cel technique
John Bray, owner of John Bray studios, had a employee named Earl Hurd, who invented the Cel technique. This involved animating moving objects on transparent celluloid sheets. -
Rotoscoping
Max and Dave Fleischer invented rotoscoping, the process of using film as a reference point for animation and their studios went on to later release such animated classics as Ko-Ko the Clown, Betty Boop, Popeye the Sailor Man, and Superman. -
El Apóstol
The first known animated feature film, made by Quirino Cristiani from Argentina. He also directed 2 other animated feature films, including 1931's Peludópolis, the 1st feature length animation to use synchronized sound. Yet, they are no longer around to be viewed. -
Felix the cat
Made by Otto Messmer, who worked for Pat Sullivan Studios, created Felix the cat for entertainment, yet the studio took all the credit for making him. -
Abstract animation
In germany, Walter Ruttman, Hans Richter, and Oskar Fischinger, invented an animation called Abstract Animation. Abstract films are non-narrative visual/sound experiences with no story and no acting. They rely on the unique qualities of motion, rhythm, light and composition inherent in the technical medium of cinema to create emotional experiences. -
Steamboat Willie
Disney's first notable breakthrough, and the the third of the Mickey Mouse series. The short film showed an anthropomorphic mouse named Mickey neglecting his work on a steamboat to instead make music using the animals aboard the boat. -
Flowers and Trees
The first animation to use the full, three-color Technicolor, which won an Academy Award for the work. -
Warner Brothers Cartoons was founded.
Warner Brothers Cartoons was founded. While Disney's studio was known for its releases being strictly controlled by Walt Disney himself, Warner brothers allowed its animators more freedom, which allowed for their animators to develop more recognizable personal styles. -
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
The first animated feature film, to be completely made using hand-drawn animation. -
CGI animation
The first fully computer-animated feature film was Pixar's Toy Story. The process of CGI animation is still very tedious and similar in that sense to traditional animation, and it still adheres to many of the same principles. A principal difference of CGI animation compared to traditional animation is that drawing is replaced by 3D modeling, almost like a virtual version of stop-motion. Types of 3D animations: CGI, Stop motion, and live action. -
Computer 2D animation
Most used form of animation in Morden times. Also one of the easiest to use.
