The first major incident that led to animal testing happened in 1933. A woman lost her eyesight after applying mascara. This caused the creation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. -
The Act
The federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act was passed in 1938. It required that all products be tested on aminals before being produced. -
THe Wonder Drug
In the 1950s and 1960s, a drug called thalidomide was produced. It was considered a wonder drug and given to thousans of pregant women. This caused more than 10,000 babies to be born with malformations or phocomelia. -
The Animal Welfare Act
The AWA was the first law on animal rights passed in the Unted States.
