When did football begin?
The game of football as we know it today has changed a lot from the first games played In the 1830's. Each school played it's own variation of the game but for all the schools there were not many rules, and this resulted in serious injuries. There were a lot of men playing at once crreating a 'mob-style' type of play. -
BANNED!
In 1860 all forms of football were banned in the city of New Haven because of the violence and the injuries that were occuring. -
College Football Begins
The first intercollegiate football game was played between Princeton and Rutgers in November of 1869. The game they played was a mixture of soccer and rugby. -
Father of American Football
Walter Camp is known as the "Father of American Football". He was a student at Yale, and he played on the football team and acted as a coach as well. Camp was a huge influence on the rules that were set into place that created the football we know today. He helped regulate the the amount of players allowed on the field at one time, he also introduced having to gain yards in a certain number of downs. -

In 1920 the American Professional Football Association was created, later renaming itself the National Football League (NFL) in 1923. -

Scores are set
The scoring system was set after many changes over the years.
In 1883, a touch down was worth 2 points and a field goal was worth 5. In 1958 the scores were finalized and have not changed since. A touchdown is now worth 6 points and a fieldgoal is worth 3. -

The Super Bowl was born, and it has been a house hold event each year since! The Super Bowl was created to determine the best team in the NFL. -
