St. Stephens declared capital
Located in SW Alabama, St. Stephens was designated Alabama's first capital and the temporary seat of government by Congress. Two sessions of the territorial legistlature met here. -

An endment approved by voters of Alabama struck out the section of the Constitution designating the selection in 1825 as 'permanent". -
Andrew Dexter
