History of Acid and Base theory's

  • Lavoisier

    Lavoisier
Lavoisier published his findings stating that oxygen gives acids their acidic qualities.
  • Davy

    Davy
Humphry Davy questioned Laviosier's defination of an acid after discovering the acidic properties of HCl, determining that it was the presence of Hydrogen that caused an acid to become 'acidic'
  • Arrhenius

    Arrhenius
Arrhenius published his findings on the properties of acids and bases in 1887, detailing the important role hydrogen plays in the acid base reactions. Describing acids as a substance that increases the concentration of Hydrogen Ions and a base as increasing the concentration of Hydroxide ions.
  • Bronsted-Lowry

    Bronsted-Lowry
Bronsted and Lowry worked together to create a more refined version of Arrhenius's theory of acids and bases. They determined that an Acid donated protons (Hydrogen ions) into a solution and a base accepted these protons. Making Acids proton donors and bases proton acceptors.
  • Lewis

    Lewis
Lewis's model is a further enhancement over the Bronsted-Lowry definition. It forgoes the idea of protons and redefines bases as electron pair donors and acids as electron pair acceptors. This helped to fill many of the holes in previous theories and is yet to be superseded today
