When new territories were aquired in the west, a lot of controversy came along with them. A big arguement was whether slavery should be aloud in these territories. This question formed many single goal parties like the Anti-Nebraska Whigs and Free Soilers. Compromises and acts were passed to help this issue like the Compromise of 1850 and the Kansas Nebraska Act. -

Election of 1844

Annexation of Texas
Texas was accepted into the Union in 1845, but gained its independence in 1836. -
Mexican American War
Extended Texas Border, gave up 525,000 miles of land from utah all the way to nevada and arizona. -
Compromise 0f 1850
The compromise that settled the dispute whether the newly gained territory from mexico should be free or slave states. -
Creation of Republican Party
Founded in the Northern states in 1854 by anti-slavery activists, modernizers, ex-Whigs, and ex-Free Soilers. -
Kansas Nebraska Act
Allowed people to vote on whether they wanted slavery in Kansas and Nebraska. -
Bleeding Kansas
Anti-slavery and Pro'slavery groups flooded in kansas to vote for whether the state should allow slavery or not. There was a lot of carnage and fighting due to the voting. -
Dred Scott vs Sanford
Supreme Court ruled that a desendent of a free or non free slave is not automatically a citizen. Also said that the Congress lacked power to ban slavery in the territories. -
Lincoln Douglass Debates

Abraham Lincoln (free-soiler) was elected. The south thought he was an abolitionist and 7 states succeeded due to his election.
