America declares its Independence from Britain
On this date the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia, PA announcing to the world the Independence of the Colonies from Britain creating the United States and causing the American Revolution. -
The Louisiana Purchase
President Thomas Jefferson purchased the Louisiana territory for $15 million. This would greatly impact the United States as it doubled in size and gained control of the Mississippi River. -
Underground Railroad tunnel
During the 19th century, the underground railroad was used by enslaved African American's who were on the run. Over 30,000 had escaped using the railroad during the 20 years it was mostly used. -
The attack on Fort Sumter
A federal post in Charleston, North Carolina, that was attacked by Confederate troops, beginning the Civil War. The Confederate troops did this in order to seize the fortress which controlled the Charleston Harbor. -
Battle of Gettysburg
The Union cut through northern Maryland to enter into southern Pennsylvania. Lee was unaware that the Union soldiers were closer to town, at the same time another confederate party had gone to Gettysburg for supplies and there they ran into the Union. The battle then began on July 1st when the Confederate part and the Union forces exchanged fire. In the end, the Union won the war. -
Battle of the Coral Sea
Allies had feared that the Japanese might attack India, Australia or the United States mainland. They U.S Pacific Fleet was led into battle by admiral Chester Nimitz, he was determined to stop the Japanese from taking over New Guinea. Neither side won a clear victory. -
Bill Clinton
Bill Clinton was born in Hope, Arkansas in the year 1992. As a teenager he got to meet president, John Kennedy, which added to his interest of becoming a politician. After being governor for 10 years, in 1992 at the age of 46, he was elected to be president.During this time the country experienced its longest period of continued economic growth. -
The Supreme Case: Brown v The Board of Education.
In the Early 1950's, five school segregation cases from Delaware,Kansas, South Carolina, Virginia and Washington D.C came together under the the name Brown v the Board of Education. The "Brown" in the case was a 7 year old African American who had to travel across town to go to school even though she lived near a school for while children. -
Montgomery Bus Boycott
Most facilities in the South, including public transportation was segregated. On December 1st 1995, an African American woman by the name of Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat when told to, therefore she was arrested. To protest this, African Americans stopped riding busses and started finding other ways of transportation. Bus ridership fell by 70% for over 381 days. -
September 11,2001
On september 11, terrorists hijacked 4 commercial airlines and used them to attack government buildings in New York and Washington D.C. The hijackers crashed two of the four planes into the World Trade Center, and one of the other two into the Pentagon. The fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. -
