This was the day the Colosseum was commissioned to begin building. It was the largest amphitheater in Rome at the time. Unlike other amphitheaters, however, which were dug into hillsides, the Colosseum was free standing. -

Lewis and Clark were hired to explore the Louisiana Territory. They charted accurate maps and discovered over 200 new species of plants and animals for European science. -
The Trail of Tears
The Trail of Tears pushed Native American tribes into what was known as "Indian Territory." This allowed more space for Americans but left the Native Americans only a tiny bit of land per tribe. -
The Attack on Fort Sumter
The confederate states attacked Fort Sumter. This marked the start of the Civil War. -
Brown v. Board of Education
Five school segregation cases came together under the name of Brown v. Board of Education to protest for a young black girl, Lily Brown, who was forced to walk across town to a school for blacks even though there was a school for whites near her house. The Supreme Court eventually declared segregation of schools and public places illegal. -

Elvis was a very talented musician, often labeled "The King of Rock and Roll." This day was his unfortunate death. He had a large impact on pop culture, developing a new version of rock and roll. -

On June 26, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was released in the UK. It's a very popular book, and one of the best books I've ever read. -
The Attacks on the Twin Towers
On September 11th, the twin towers where attacked and collapsed to the ground. This shattered America's sense of safety at the time. -
