History British colonisation of Australia

  • Period: to

    The industrial revolution

The industrial revolution was one of the most important events in the history of the world. The industrial revolution was an event were manufacturing changed forever. Manufacturing changed from hand manufacturing to using machines powered by coal this emerged new industries and introduced the factory system. New chemicals were introduced and the iron industry became more efficient. This put people out of business but Britain needed a bigger jail and sent people to find Australia making Australia
  • The first fleet

    The first fleet
When Britain lost the American war of independence Britain had to withdraw their convicts from America their main colony their prisons were getting full and high unemployment wasn't helping keep crime rates go down so Britain sent explorers to go find a "great Southern land" and when they found it Britain sent a fleet of 11 ships containing over 1000 people (not each). They founded a penal colony and began to build this country.
  • Period: to

    NSW economic strategys

Until Australia's federation the colonies had their own government. The first and most powerful colony NSW were traders but what mostly did they trade? Wool, up until fabrics and other materials were invented wool was used in clothes and the wool industry in NSW was huge! The wool industry kept the state going and in number 2 there was probably the wheat industry but that is why when we go to old fashion Aussie carnivals they show sheep shearing to remind us about how important it is (or was).
  • Queensland

Queensland was first founded in 1824 to be a penal colony in Port Moresby but wasn't given a chance to become colony until 1854 (they took it). Brisbane as its capital Queensland went through some bloody conflicts with Aboriginals. The settlers had serious resistance from but settlers pushed the Aboriginals back and the settlers built over the land they captured.
  • The moving of borders

Until 1825 NSW was the only colony in Australia until in 1825 Van diemens land became a different colony. In the same year NSW border expanded more west. In 1829 Britain gained control of the whole of Australia after founding the colony of Western Australia.
  • Van diemens land

Van diemens land was first introduced in 1803 but wasn't a seperate colony until 1825. Known for fierce penal settlements and heavy Aboriginal resistance it wouldn't of been a favourite place for convicts. With an economy based of whaling, wool, meat and wheat the colony prospered and strived. It was from here that colonists set off from port Phillip to colonise Melbourne
  • The colony of south Australia

In 1836 the colony of SA (south Australia) was founded. The colonists wanted the colony to be based off of free settlers and not convict labour. Adelaide had become the centre of the new colony.
Wool, wheat and copper were important contributors to the new colony.
  • Colonising the west

When it was established in 1829 the Swan river colony was supposed to be a colony of free settlers. But after 20 years of struggle the colony had to resort to convict labour. In 1849 the Swan river colony became a penal colony. Limited agriculture around the Swan river meant that the remote colonies growth was slow. That changed in the late 1880's when gold was found their fortunes changed.
  • The gold rush

    The gold rush
When gold was found in Bathurst people from all around the world began coming to Australia providing the colonies that found gold economic power but Victoria had most gold giving it enough economic power to rival the most powerful colony NSW since then rivalries began to surface. In economics NSW were traders and Victoria were protectionists.
  • The founding of Victoria

In 1851 when gold was found in Bathurst and the gold rush began shortly after the state of Victoria was founded. Melbourne was founded in 1835 by a man named John Batman (yes Batman) after a rare treaty was established with the local Aborigine elders. The treaty was later ignored by settlers mostly from Tasmania. It was gold found over at the Ballarat and Bendigo goldfields that would change the colonies fate for the better.
  • The end of the American civil war

The end of the American civil war
1865 Americas worst conflict in the history stopped. The American civil war was a war between the union and confederate armies. Confederates were a side who used slaves and were racist while the Union was a side against slavery. This war changed American history because if the confederates won America would of used slaves and may of been communists. Britain was sending slaves to the confederate states and when the confederates lost the country became union and convicts weren't able to be sent.
  • Marvellous Melbourne in victorious Victoria

The gold rush was an amazing economic investment for Victoria. With Melbourne at its centre when people left for the goldfields they returned back when the easy gold had run out. New industry's came to Melbourne the city had become a manufacturing centre and by the 1880's wages their for workers became the highest in the world at some point. Marvellous Melbourne a city by the Yarra river had become a booming city.
  • Towards self- government

Because of its slow growth and need for convict labour Britain rejected calls for self-government by the colony even though by 1859 all the other colonies had their own parliament. With its growing wealth because of gold and this called more requests for self parliament became stronger. Finally in 1890 Britain agreed to give self parliament. Some western colonies were hostile about accepting federation with eastern colonies.
  • Souths stay strong

When an economic depression hit Australia in 1890 SA didn't suffer as badly as NSW and VIC because their agriculture and mining (mostly copper). Cautious about the federation SA was careful about being disadvantaged because they were less populous than the two most powerful colonies.
  • Rasicm

In six of the colonies the Aborigines rights were ignored. A law stating that Aboriginal welfare was the priority of the British government and the government (colonial) had to spend a certain amount of revenue on the Aboriginal people but this law was ignored and indigenous Australians seemed to be left out of the country.
  • Why people came to Queensland

Well it's quite obvious that people usually came to live in Queensland because of gold but just like today Queensland was a tropical paradise and immigrants (mostly Chinese) came to Queensland for gold and the climate was a bonus. Like other colonies immigration restrictions were put and as the sugar industry was big use of Pacific Islander labourers caused tension between the other colonies which were opposed to non-White immigration. Despite the controversies the colonies prospered.
  • The nations uniting

The journey to federation was slow with the idea only gaining interest in the last decade of the 1800's. Each of the colonies were scared of giving up independence to the parliament. With such a large amount immigrants it was strange that federation took so long but finally in 1901 federation was declared and the colonies United to become 1 great nation (Australia).
