Foundation
The New York Police Department, before known as Municipal Police Force, was funded in 1845 with 900 men. The model used to establish the department was the London Metropolitan Police, similar to Sir Robert Peel reform. -
Isabella Goodwin
Isabella Goodwin, born in 1865 in New Your City, was the first female police officer in NYPD. In 1881 she applied to be a Police Officer and then she served for 15 years, and during this time she started involving with investigations and become the first female investigator in NYC. -
Samuel Battler
Samuel Battler, son of former slaves, was the first black police officer in the NYPD, the first black Sargeant, and the first black lieutenant in New York City. -

Crime Increases
From the 1960s to the 1970’s the number of crimes in New York City strongly increased. Homicide, burglaries, robberies, and rapes are examples of crimes that the number becomes two times more. -
September 11
During the September 11 attacks, 23 NYPD officers were killed. The life lost on this event was the highest in NYPD history. -
NYPD Counter-Terrorism Bureau
As a result of the September 11 attacks, the department created the NYPD Counter-Terrorism Bureau in 2002. The responsibility of this division is to prevent terrorist attacks within New York City. -
NYPD Intelligence Bureau
After September 11, the New York City Police Department Intelligence Bureau was created. This division is responsible for the detection and disruption of criminal and terrorist activity through the use of intelligence-led policing. -
Martine Materasso
Martine Materasso is the first female named chief of NYPD Counterterrorism Bureau.
