    The U.S wants to buy Cuba.
    For some years, the U.S wanted to buy Cuba from Spain for about $130 million. One reason we wanted Cuba was for the resources it had, like sugar, and for rich investors. Another reason was to expand our "Empire" so we could try to be one of the world powers.

    Cuba's First war for independence (A.K.A the 10 years war.)
    Cuba fought for their independence from Spain, because they were tired of their oppression, and slavery. Even tho they lost the first war, Spain eventually abolished slavery in 1895.

    Cuba's second war for independence was led by Jose Marti, who was kicked out by his country for his beliefs. He died in 1895 in his first. battle

    Valeriano Weyler was sent to Cuba by Spain
    To try to control the uprising in Cuba, the Spanish government sent Valeriano Weyler to deal with it. He thought that by putting the citizens into pen/camps, he could tell the difference between the people and rebels.

    To bring in more money, the Press sent journalists over to document the events going on in Cuba. They tried to make the Spanish look bad by saying Valeriano Weyler was a savage killer and other things. This is one of many things they did that made us want to fight the Spanish.

    In order to prevent American casualties, General Dewey sent the USS Maine to pick up Americans and bring them back to America. While docked in the Philippine harbor an electrical problem happened in the boiler room, which caused the whole ship to blow up and sink in the harbor. After American's found out about this, they immediately blamed the Spanish, and wanted revenge for this outrage.

    U.S Declare war on Spain
    On April 20th, a few days after the explosion of the USS Maine, Congress finally declared war on Spain. We sent the American Navel Fleet to the Philippines to deal with the Spanish. In the morning in the Philippines harbor the fleet was greeted by cannon fire. The next morning, we took over the harbor with one person dead.
