    The start of the American Revolution
    On April 19,1775, Paul Revere, William Dawes, and Dr. Samuel Prescott and some Americans stood their ground at Lexington, Concord. They were all armed with guns and were facing the British Army, the best trained army on earth at the time.
  • Washington crosses the Delaware River

    Washington crosses the Delaware River
    Washington knew that if he didn't capture Princeton, New Jersey, the Americans would lose the war. He crossed the Delaware on a boat.
  • Washington and his troops stay in Vally Forge

    Washington and his troops stay in Vally Forge
    Vally Forge had a clear view of Philadelphia, where the British were staying. It was so cold that winter that a big chunk of Washington's army died that winter
  • The British Surrender at Yorktown

    At the beginning of the battle, the British had already been outnumbered. In the end, the Americans won because the British were outnumbered and got independence!!!
  • Washington is elected president

    On this day, Thomson, who was the secretary of the Continental Congress, carried a letter that said that Washington had been elected president. Washington had just returned to his home in Virginia, Mt. Vernon. He had been a general in the American Revolution and was a big help in beating the British, so he was very popular.
  • The French Revolution begins

    The French were fed up with their king, King Louis XVl in France. Their king had been putting political prisoners in the Bastille and forgetting them!
  • The cotton gin is invented

    The cotton gin was invented in the Union area by Eli Whitney to harvest cotton seeds. This object made slaves more valuable in the South and was probaly the cause of the Civil War.
  • The Louisiana Purchase

    The French were selling a piece of land that they had that was west of the current USA for very cheap. Thomas Jefferson made the decision to buy the land. This purchase was called the Louisiana Purchase.
  • Lewis and Clark's journey begins.

    Lewis and Clark's journey begins.
    America has just done the Louisiana Purchase. Lewis and Clark needed to scout out the area to see if it was livable. Their journey started and ended at St. Louis, Missouri and lasted for 2 years. They studied the area's plants, animal life, and geography.
  • The Star Spangled Banner is written

    On this day, Francis Scott Key stood in a ship and watched the British attack Baltimore. He then wrote the song,"The Star Spangled Banner".
  • Birds of America is published

    Birds of America is published
    Birds of America was written by a person named John James Audubon. It was published in London. As far as we know, Audubon was the first person to put a band on a bird's leg, and then wait to see if it would return. Audubon started painting birds when a guy named Alexander Wilson showed him his paintings of birds and said that they were the best bird drawings in America.
  • Andrew Jackson is elected president

    Andrew Jackson beat Adams by quite a margin and becomes president. He won because all his supporters were unhappy that he lost to John Quincy Adams.
  • The Indian removal act is passed

    The Indian Removal Act said that all Indians had to move west to the area that was west of the Louisiana Purchase. The Americans didn't want Indians on the land they owned.
  • The Alamo

    Santa Anna defeats the Texans at the "Alamo". Among the Texans, were Davy Crocket, William Travis, and Jim Bowie. In the begining, the Texans already had less troops than Santa Anna, so they lost the battle.
  • Sam Houston defeats Santa Anna

    In present day Harris Country, Texas, Sam Houston defeated Santa Anna and forced him to sign a treaty that said that Texas could become its own nation. Sam Houston knew that the Mexicans chose a certain time in the day to nap 15 minutes. He used that time to attack the Mexicans.
  • John Tyler becomes president

    John Tyler becomes president
    John Tyler was the first vice president to take over as president after the death of a president (William Henry Harrison). Florida was named a state while Tyler was in office.
  • Morse code is first used

    Morse code was invented by a guy named Samuel Morse. The first Morse code conversation was between Maine and Florida. This was a lot faster than sending mail across states, which, at the time, was about 2 weeks.
  • Texas becomes 25th states

    After fighting for freedom from Mexico, Texas became the 25th state of the USA. When Texas was still part of Mexico, Mexico had been taxing the settlers a lot and was not giving then anything in return.

    James Marshall is working at Suttters Mill and comes across a piece of gold!!!!!
  • The meeting at Seneca Falls

    After eight years, Elizabeth Cady Stanton Lucretia Mott, and some other friends organized the meeting at Seneca Falls. There they wrote a declaration known as the Seneca Falls Declaration.

    Underground Railroad

    The Underground Railroad was not a railroad. It was used during the Civil War to help slaves from the South, get to the free states in the North.
  • Walt Whitman sends printed versions of Leaves of Grass to a few selected people.

    Walt Whitman lived in Rhode Island. One of the people that Walt Whitman sent a version of Leaves of Grass to was named Ralph Waldo Emerson. Ralph Waldo Emerson lived in Brooklyn. Walt Whitman wanted only certain people to read Leaves of Grass. He delivered the poems himself.
