Historical Timeline of K-12 Public Education

  • Infant Schools

    Infant Schools
Originally offered for children ages 3-5, giving them the opportunity to have fun before they entered the factory life. This was the first time the children received what they needed, an education,to benefit them, not their parents.
  • Public HIgh School

    Public HIgh School
This allowed men, at the time, to receive a free high school education that was comparable to the academy's upper academic levels. Making education free for those who could not have otherwise attended is a huge stride in the history of American public schools.
  • Physical Punishment Ends

    Physical Punishment Ends
Until the 1820's-1830's it was legal for teachers to physically punish students. How students are treated in the classroom today has been greatly impacted by this event. Teachers should be an example for them to follow; kindness and respect have a greater impact than physical punishment.
  • Horace Mann

    Horace Mann
Horace Mann's ideas and leadership helped shape the public education system to what it is today. He is the reason everybody has access to free public education. The equality that he stood for has given even those who are poor, a chance to be successful and break that cycle.
  • Native Schools

    Native Schools
The lack of native schools encouraged ex slaves to create their own "native schools". Native Americans realized that no matter how educated somebody was, they could not be educated to overcome barriers of race. This was the first step in accepting those of different races into public schools.
