Education is Offered to Former Slaves
At the very beginning of the Progressive Period, W.E.B. Dubois and Booker T. Washington founded the Tuskegee University in Alabama. This institute educated former slaved African American men and women. They enriched this community with lessons based off of "learning by doing". This method was thought to be the most beneficial and effective way of learning for the students. -
Establishing School Curriculum
The NEA Committee of Ten, a group of educators, discussed the standard practices of schools. They established the idea of eight years of elementary school, followed by four years of secondary school. This group also declared the allowance of choosing elective classes to take to enhance the learning environment. -
Maria Montessori
Maria Montessori was the first female innovative and progressive educator. She believed that education rooted from the senses and intellect. Her ways of teaching were based on each individual child's interests and abilities. -
Brown Versus the Board of Education
Linda Carol Brown, a seven year old girl, had been forbidden from being enrolled in an all-white public school. She was forced to attend the all-black school instead. Her father took a stand to fight against this unfair treatment to people of color. The supreme court finally reached the decision eliminating segregation in schools. Their hope was to ensure students knew their worth was not based on the color of their skin. -
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
This act was put in place to ensure there is a place for everyone in education. In order to fully be there for each child's needs, the IDEA provided free public education to students with disabilities. In addition, it became a rule for public schools to include programs for each and every child's unique needs.
