    The African Institute, known as Cheyney University, was now established for African American students in Cheyney P.A. by Richard Humphreys.
  • Ashmun Institute

    Ashmun Institute, now Lincoln University, was the first male university for African Americans.
  • Spelman College Founded

    Spelman College was founded in Atlanta, G.A., for African American women.
  • The United Negro College Fund (UNCF)

    The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) was founded by Fredrick D. Patterson to help African American students receive grants and scholarships towards 37 privately owned universities.
  • Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964

    Ban racial discrimination in private and public schools.
  • Higher Education Act of 1965 (HEA)

    HEA made colleges more accessible to low and middle-income students by creating federal student aid.
  • Affirmative Action

    Structural policies were created to respond against discrimination for students to access higher education. Lyndon B. Johnson introduced it as executive Order 11246.
