Poor and working class men recognized the necessity of general education. This led to governors recommending establishment of tax supported schools. Free taxpayer-supported schools started to become established and continue to provide access to all U.S. citizens.

A blue print was established for the modern comprehensive high school. Because of the broadened content taught in high schools, students are able to follow their own academic or vocational interests and plans.

After some resistance, it started the process of desegregation in our schools. It led to our schools having diversity. Diversity has provided students with academic and social benefits.

Special Education leaders began the fight towards inclusion in the classroom. Many court decisions later, special needs children have more of an equal opportunity in school.
